SOUND MIND

Preacher:
Passage: 2 Timothy 1:7

We give God the praise for coming into the second part of our Divine Accomplishment series. Last week we talked about “Praise as a Weapon,” and today by His grace, we shall be talking about “Sound Mind.” Hallelujah!

What is a sound mind and why is it needed in the course of our journey in life as a child of God? A sound mind is a God-granted disciplined, clear, and courageous minded stability that opposes disorderliness, panic, fear, and temptation, among others.

This soundness of mind gives us the ability to guard the truth, make wise choices, and remain trustworthy under any weather. And this sound mind is a spirit given to us by God because He understood that many are living their lives in fear and disarray.

The grip of fear has gotten many to the extent that what heaven ought to have accomplished in them and through them could not be accomplished because of the lack of sound mind, lack of power, and lack of love.

Hence the reason Paul wrote the letter to Timothy so as to provide guidance and encouragement to him because of the journey ahead of him. Because to be divinely accomplished, you will need to have a sound mind and not a sick or doubting mind governed by bitterness or fear.

You will need to have a mind of boldness and courage to be able to accomplish what God has placed in your hands. And this is the same word of encouragement that God used for Joshua in Joshua 1:9: “Have I not told you? Be strong and be courageous.”

Anyone who wants to have divine accomplishment must pray for the spirit of sound mind and be encouraged by God with the releasing of this Spirit into their lives, for nothing a man can do except it is given to him from above.

We need the spirit of sound mind to be balanced for divine accomplishment, to be sober and not to be driven by panic or emotional chaos. We need the spirit of sound mind to have clarity over fear instead of anxiety and being cowardly.

What has made many people today to chicken out is because of the absence of a sound mind. What has made many to compromise today is because of the absence of a sound mind. The absence of this spirit is the reason why many cannot finish what they have started.

A sound mind is a mind of Christ that aligns a believer’s thoughts with the sound discretion of Jesus. No wonder Prophet Micah said in Micah 3:8: “But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, and of justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.”

The prophet was able to accomplish his purpose through the Spirit of God that shows sound discretion operating within him. Instead of him to chicken out in the presence of the people of Israel and Jacob, he operated in full power and sound mind to accomplish God’s purpose.

Beloved, without a sound mind, without power, without love, we will not be able to use our abilities as God wills to overcome our fears, our challenges, and more like it. We will not be able to operate in the Spirit of God to the fullest.

So knowing that God has not given us the spirit of fear is actually the main reason why you must embrace what God has made available to us. The Apostle Paul said in Acts 21:13: “Then Paul answered, ‘Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.’”

For somebody here this morning, no longer must you live unsound, unbalanced, unstable. No longer must you live in the state of fear and intimidation, because fear will cloud judgment and cause you to react to circumstances through panic rather than faith.

No longer must we allow ourselves to be imprisoned by anxiety and worldly cares, for a fractured state of mind will end up having excessive worry and will end up being distracted. And the Bible says in Matthew 13:22 that the care of this world chokes out the spirit of truth.

So according to Philippians 4:6-7, we must be anxious for nothing. But in everything, make your supplication known to God.

For when there is no sound mind, there is a tendency for loss of self-control which makes someone to become undisciplined and chaotic, which is governed by bitterness and envy (Titus 1:8).

So for someone who knows that God has not given them a reprobate mind, God has not given them a debased or a blinded mind that cannot perceive spiritual reality accurately (2 Corinthians 4:4), you gotta make use of what has been made available to us, which is a sound mind. Let the Spirit of the Lord possess you to give you a sound mind.

I pray the Lord delivers you from every foul and familiar spirit called fear and intimidation hindering your sound mind in Jesus’ name. Amen.

To have a great accomplishment, we need a sound mind that will deliver us from the spirit of fear, compromise, and guilt so that we can become healthy again for the accomplishment God has purposed for us.
