THE ROOTED SEED

Preacher:
Series:
Passage: Colossians 2:1-10

What is a rooted seed? A rooted seed is a seed that goes all the way down into the earth. Though, when given growth, its growth is not feasibly seen right at the moment of growth because while other seeds are germinating upward, it is growing downward so as to become rooted and strong enough against storms and whatever may want to destroy it after springing forth.

And such is the seed called mustard. Research made us know that while all seeds exhibit “positive geotropism” (roots grow down, shoots up), the mustard seed is famously used in agricultural metaphors to describe a seed that prioritizes deep, initial rooting before visible upward expansion.

This mustard seed grows downward first to anchor itself, making its initial growth invisible from the surface while it builds strength to survive storms. So that by the time it springs forth, it will not be worried or shaken due to whatever circumstances it may face. And how does this apply to us or what can we learn from this?

The Bible explained to us from where we read that, as much as we are children of God who most of the time will find ourselves in places with possibly the absence of your pastor, your mentor, the ones who you believe can guide you in the word of God.

It is a must for every one of us to see ourselves as this mustard seed as we journey with Christ. Since we have given our lives to Jesus, we have the connotation of seeing ourselves as a deeply rooted mustard seed as we continue in our journey with Christ.

Because to be a rooted seed simply means you take your time to know Christ deeply, to know Him the more so as to overcome fears and trials and tribulations when revealing Christ to the world, you want to take your time to be rooted in Christ deeply so as to avoid temptations, so as to operate in the power of the One who is the head of all principality and power.

Those who are not rooted are the ones who when sprouted easily get withered, get blown away like chaff in the wind because there was no foundation. Hence the reason some Christians could not hold the fort after seeing a little temptation. They could not stand heads up when they are tempest-tossed.

So this word of God this morning should give us the understanding that it is critical for us to be deeply rooted in Christ, in His word, in prayer, because these are the requisites for standing solid in the world of chaos and calamities.

Because receiving Christ only is not enough, but the word of God wants us to walk in Him, be rooted and built up in Him and be established in the faith and then abound in it with thanksgiving.

For this is a continual growth that is expected for anyone who is called a child of God. Beginning with Jesus is not enough. Hence this encouragement to continue in your walk with Him.

For the consequence of just receiving Jesus and not wanting to be deeply rooted is detrimental to our state of mind as it would open the door to be cheated through empty deceit, philosophy, ideas according to the tradition of men and basic principles of the world and not according to Christ.

This is why people bring political ideas to deal with theocratic situations, using ideas according to the tradition of men to deal with spirituality.

I want you to weigh in on this topic rhetorically this morning, beloved, so as to know that to be deeply rooted in Christ is essential, lest you find yourself becoming a victim of heresies, of a situation that could have been taken care of, had it been you are rooted in Christ Jesus.

You will ask, why is it that Paul had nothing that shook him in the midst of trials and tribulations ? The answer is because he desired to continually be rooted in Christ. Philippians 3:10, he wrote, “That I may know Him…”

In other words, he yearned to continually be rooted in Christ. Before he would spring forth, he had already spent three years in Arabia knowing more about God (Galatians 1:17-18). If all that we rely on is the sermon you heard on TV, social media, in the church, on the radio, and whatnot.

I can assure you it is not enough, but you must know Christ and His word by yourself. Be deeply rooted so that your springing forth will not come with emptiness, because the disaster that awaits springing forth that comes with emptiness is witheredness.

So for us not to be withered away, become the rooted seed like the mustard seed today. People may say you take time to spring forth. They may say you are late in springing forth. They may say it seems nothing is working for you, but let not your heart be troubled.

Because when you will spring forth, all those who have said one thing or the other against you will have no choice but to hide from the scorching sun under the shade your tree branches provide.

Become the rooted seed today, beloved. Let us have this life-giving union and permanent life with Jesus Christ. Let us be established in the soil of Jesus to draw out the necessary nourishment and strength needed, for Jesus is the source of life.

For you to have a firm standing and become established in faith, we need to be the rooted seed in Christ, for in Him is the provision for stability when challenged by confusing, deceptive arguments, by trials and temptation and tribulation.

Your invisible initial growth is something you must take seriously, and that can come by first determining to be deeply rooted so that you can have what you have known in Christ as your anchor for a rapid later growth just like the mustard seed. Once it is deeply rooted, there is this fast growth that happens, often developed from a tiny seed into a large herb.

So be the rooted seed so that you become a tree that spring for the to become a habitation for others
