WHEN MERCY SPEAKS
When we talk of mercy, we are talking of God Himself. God is mercy. The book of Jonah chapter 2 verse 8 says those who regard worthless idols forsake their own mercy, but Jonah had the understanding of who mercy is and he was able to ascribe to God the name mercy.
Mercy, which can be termed as loyal love, so often describes God’s faithfulness to His covenant and to His people, and it is mostly used as a name for the Lord. In Jonah 4 verse 2, Jonah qualified God as a merciful God.
Psalm 13 verse 5 also talks about how David trusted in God’s mercy, so one character that describes God is mercy, and this mercy is a commitment that makes God take care of His people even when they do not deserve it.
Also, the Bible says in the book of Exodus 33:19 that God is the one who declares mercy on whom He wishes, so sometimes mercy can qualify the unqualified when it speaks on someone’s life.
Even though God can do whatever He wants whenever He wants, mercy can make God rethink His actions towards men if men understand the currency of mercy and how to make use of it. Because what your ability and your agility cannot get you, mercy will get it for you.
Sometimes when someone does something wrong and the person has already lost hope because he knows there is no way out of the mess because of his own misdeeds, and he asks for mercy, if mercy speaks, what has become a disaster which could end in fatality can be reversed due to mercy spoken.
There was this story of a man of God whose heaven was closed due to the error he committed to the church. When things started falling apart for him, everywhere he kept running to for help, no one was able to help, and when he went to those who were senior to him, they would tell him that no matter how much they prayed, nothing would work for him, and he was told to just go and be pleading to God for mercy because he was operating under closed heavens.
But when mercy speaks, there was a turnaround.
Here, from where we read, we could see how mercy spoke on behalf of Bartimaeus, a man who understood the value of mercy. He understood that what his righteousness, goodness, attitude, kindness, or his condition could not get him, if he applied mercy to it, it would be given.
Bartimaeus knew that the fame and the connection and the money or the righteousness to access Jesus was lacking, but in the midst of all his lack, he knew that he could get what he wanted from Jesus by spending the currency of mercy.
He knew when mercy speaks, it qualifies the unqualified to see God. When mercy speaks, it opens doors that ought to remain closed. He knew that when mercy speaks, transformation will kick in. He had the understanding that what mercy cannot do does not exist.
Hence the reason he would not hesitate to cry for mercy. You will be wondering why Jesus stopped to attend to the one who was about to be silenced, someone who was about to miss his opportunity. It is because of mercy.
There has been no one in the word of God who cried to God for mercy whom God turned deaf ears to. There is no record of such from Genesis to Revelation. And why that is, is because God is mercy.
So maybe you have not yet known the currency of mercy. Maybe you don’t know who mercy is. Perhaps you do not know how far mercy can go just because of you. I am here to tell you that you need mercy to speak over your life.
Without Bartimaeus screaming mercy, he might have been silenced totally by those who wanted to silence him, but through the shout of mercy that was uttered, he was able to encounter Jesus and his problem was no more.
Mercy spoke for Bartimaeus. Mercy gave Bartimaeus the opportunity to encounter Jesus. Mercy quieted those who rejected this blind man because they saw him as nobody and made him become accepted again.
When that mercy speaks, it calls the attention of Jesus to a nobody to make him somebody.
That mercy is what you need in your life to encounter Jesus. For mercy will call the attention of Yahweh to you when it speaks over your life. It will make the heavens have no choice but to listen to your plea when it speaks over your life.
This the devil knows, and hence the reason he does not let us value mercy so much.
In the book of 2 Samuel 24, when David committed atrocities before God by having a headcount of the people of Israel and God wanted to punish him for it, in verse 13, he was given three options of punishment: 1. Seven years of famine 2. Flee three months before his enemies and 3. Three days plague in his land.
And David picked the third one, saying in verse 14 that he would rather fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are great. This is coming from the one who understood what the mercies of the Lord are. And truly that mercy of God spoke over him, hence the reason God did not make a complete wiping of the people of Jerusalem.
I pray for you this morning, the mercy of God will speak over your life.
Perhaps there are things in your life that need the mercy of God to speak over them before they can start responding profitably unto you. I can assure you that what you need to do is to cry out for mercy.
For when mercy speaks – When mercy speaks, judgment is annulled – the Bible says mercy prevails over judgment (James 2:13).
Habakkuk 3:2 says “In wrath, O God, remember mercy” – for even when God is angry, and you plead for mercy before Him, He will let go of His anger. Mercy speaks of a mother’s tender compassion for her child. Even in the exercise of His wrath, God has mercy on those He disciplines.
Mercy is still speaking till today, hence the reason God uses the rainbow as a sign of His covenant towards the earth. I want you to cry for mercy this morning because no matter how entangled your life might have become, mercy have what it takes to bring solution to your entanglement.
No wonder the people of God cried to the Lord in Psalm 123 talks about how people cried for mercy
Cry out for mercy somebody , for when mercy speaks, there is transformation, there is forgiveness, there is healing, there is an encounter that brings new living.
