THE MOTHER HEN
Today by His grace, we will be looking into the word of God to see God as our Mother Hen. The activities of God over our lives and all that matters to the world qualifies God as a loving Mother who understands what it means to carry us on His back for protection, preservation so that we may grow to become what God has purposed us to be.
Seeing God from the perspective of a mother hen is a feminine biblical metaphor of God’s divine protection, affection, sacrifice, and His nurturing love over us. It shows God’s kindness towards us, for He did not stop looking forward to caring, gathering, and sheltering us under His wings and comforting us.
As young chicks, it is a norm for us to wander about, looking for what is not lost, trying to prove we are matured enough to take care of ourselves, which we weren’t, and that is why God will not hesitate to watch our back for us 24/7/365.
No wonder the book of Psalm 91 verse 4 talks about His active protection and shelter, which speaks of His guaranteed divine refuge that we can find under His feathers, and this talks about God’s protective presence during danger.
Also, much more than an earthly mother hen would use her own body as a shield during a fire, the sacrificial love of God is the reason why God will not hesitate to use His own body as a shield to cover us from hellfire by sacrificing His body on the cross for us.
God has repeatedly demonstrated His love, starting from the beginning of the ages. To Adam and Eve, He covered their shame. To the Israelites, He led them as a mother eagle, hovering over them as a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night and carrying them on His wings, which was one of the most common ways God has shown His love towards His people when they are vulnerable or stray away.
So even though we cannot but appreciate our mothers for their role which is multifaceted to nurturing, protecting children to foster their healthy emotional, physical, and cognitive development as a primary caregiver that God made them to be so as to raise their children to independent adults, the role of Yahweh goes far beyond what an earthly human or animal mother will do, for He created us and knows our weaknesses more than we all do.
And that makes me say that in the midst of your vulnerability, somebody, I can assure you that seeing God from the perspective of a Mother really goes a long way. For God’s desire is to protect, preserve you, even when you are scattered, when you feel like you do not want to be carried, you do not want to be comforted. His Mother Hen side will arise to give protection, provision to your wandering heart, to your wandering soul.
Jesus said in Luke 13:34, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I wanted to gather your children together.” Somebody, Jesus cares for you. He cares for you. He often wants to gather us, His children, together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and I want to urge us this morning to be willing.
Perhaps you are willing some of the times and not always, or you have not been willing at all.
Mothers, be willing. Fathers, be willing. Children, be willing, for God is willing to bring you under His protective care so that you will no longer be vulnerable and wide open to attacks of every sort.
Am I talking to somebody here this morning? Even though many see God from the masculine or kingly depictions, God is also a mother to as many who want to be carried on His back or hide under the shadow of His wings, because the femininity of God is what provides warmth and safety to you beyond how an earthly mother hen protects her young.
He is your Mother Hen, somebody. He is your Mother Eagle, somebody. You gotta lean on Him, trust in Him, and let Him nurture you to growth. Let Him keep your glory from glory slayers. Let Him keep your destiny from destiny destroyers so that you can fulfill your purpose in life with His backing.
According to Isaiah 46:4, He has promised to bear you up even to your old age. He promised to carry you and sustain you and deliver you.
Even when it feels like you are overburdened by situations of life, He will be your comfort in chaos, comfort during crises, joy in the midst of tears for you. I want to tell you that you are not alone, for you have God as your Mother Hen and He is willing to gather the pieces together for you.
We cannot go through this dangerous world alone. We cannot rely on the presence of our spouse as a form of security alone, but Jesus’ presence is what chases the calamities and afflictions away. His presence chases the evil hawk and vulture away.
When the hawk is flying in the sky and the mother hen notices it, she makes a sound that alerts her children and opens her wings so that they can run in there for protection, so that they can be saved from becoming the hawk’s prey.
More than that is what Jesus is to us, somebody. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:10, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and they are safe.” This also, the psalmist understood in Psalm 17 verse 8 when he asked God to keep him as the apple of His eye and hide him in the shadow of His wings.
That said, if you have not been seeing Yahweh as your Mother Hen, today is the day! For that is who He is. Women, I know you will go extra miles for your spouse, for your children. I know you have the zeal for protection in the midst of chaos for your children.
That is good, but you must look unto Jesus, trust in Jesus to take care of those children for you. You cannot do it alone. Release yourself and your loved ones to be protected by the great Mother Hen, and you will be secured at all times under His feathers.
Because just like Hosea 11:4 says, “I led them with cords of kindness, with ropes of love; I lifted the yoke from their necks and bent down to feed them.” He is ready to lead you with cords of kindness, with ropes of love and lift off every yoke off your neck, then bend down to feed you.
What else can we be clamoring for that God, our Mother Hen, did not have in His capacity? What else can we be scared of and curious about or anxious about that our great Mother Hen did not have in His custody to take care of?
You are a mother, but we have a Mother of all mothers. Take your case to Him. Release your burdens to Him. Hand over those children to Him and let Him grow them to become who God has purposed them to be.
God bless you all!
