THE HIGH PRAISES OF GOD
This is a psalm of exuberant call to praise God, not with mere words but HIGH praises to God, not with partial praise but HIGH praises to God – this psalm was used by the army of Israel as well as by the people in their worship of God.
It centers on a call for a new song of praise, a call for joyful worship of praise in the congregation of the Lord, a call for joyful worship of praise in the army of the Lord, and a concluding shout of praise.
And the question we would ask is, why do they offer praise with great excitement? Why do they acknowledge the fact that their continuous existence as the army and people of Israel is because of God’s backing? Why do they give HIGH praises to God because of the victories received thus far?
Because they have seen God to be their Maker, their Creator, and they have personally seen and heard of His mighty moves. They had encounters beyond the ordinary. They know that God takes pleasure in His people, most especially those who praise Him, and that has cultivated in them a habit of praise through songs and dance, through shouts and instruments of praise.
We read about this when David killed Goliath. We also read about it when Deborah brought victory to Israel, and Isaiah also praised God for His strength and His salvation. So the psalmist here is calling our attention to the infallible praises that the name of God is worthy of.
So why must the high praises of God be in our mouth? The reason is to chase out fears, to cast out imaginations and doubts, to pull down strongholds of defeat that the devil meant to overcome us with.
Because what you praise in your heart, or with your mouth, is what will eventually come towards you. It is what will overcome you and become a master over you. For instance, if you are praising your worries and doubts through continuous proclamation of their impacts over your lives, then they will continue to exalt themselves before you. You will be humbled before them and they will lord themselves over you.
The reason why our praises must be a highly exalted type to our God is because it will identify us as one who is humbled before our Maker, and just like the illustration I just gave, then it will make God become our Master, our Maker. God will overcome us with His presence and His glory.
And because we filled our mouth with His praise, which He takes pleasure in, then He will beautify us with salvation over whatever comes our way. For when God sees that the praise you are giving to Him is not coming from a heart that has been polluted with pride and the worries of life, then He will come through for you with salvation.
Hence the reason the psalmist told us in verse 6: “Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand.” In other words, while you use your hand to focus on the fight, your mouth must declare the praises of God at all times.
And doing that will make God give total and permanent victory so that His praise will not cease from your mouth. The Bible says, “His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Beloved, after a successful revival, we have nothing to do but to celebrate with praise. We have high praise to give to our God for His glorious presence and His move in our midst.
A heart and a mouth that will not give God the praise is a heart and a mouth that would be full of complaint, hence the reason the praises of our God must be HIGH in our mouth.
For there is an honor God has given to all His children, most especially to those who know how to praise God always, to those who know how to give HIGH praises to our God. This honor is the victory God gives to you over your enemies, because as you find yourself fighting battles, fighting challenges of life and the like, you do not stop giving HIGH praises to your God, and doing this will make God use the weapons He has put in your hand to execute vengeance on the nations and punishments on the peoples, to bind their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.
So your HIGH praises of God must be an eloquent type that will not give chance to worries and anxieties in your life. The psalmist called it HIGH praise for a reason. In other words, every other praise must be lower while the praise of God remains higher.
The PRAISES of GOD must be EXALTED over every other praise, over self praise, financial praise, material praise, vanity praise, friend praise, helpers’ praise, medical praise, attorney praise, men’s praise, women’s praise, and every other praise with a name or description.
For GOD and GOD alone deserves ALL praise. Not Buddha, not Krishna, not Muhammad, not any idol in bodily form or sculptural form… JESUS alone deserves all praises. The bible says in Ps 96:4 (For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: He is to be feared above all gods.)
That said, praise God in a high manner from today going forward. Rejoice in your Maker in a high manner from today going forward. Be joyful in your King, O children of Zion, from today going forward.
Praise His name with the dance and sing praises to Him with instruments of praise from today going forward. Be joyful in glory and sing aloud even on your beds from today going forward. Let the HIGH PRAISES of our God be in our mouth from today going forward.
In the book of Neh. 9:5 (Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be Thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.)
His glorious name is exalted above all blessing and praise. His glory is above the earth. If the sun and the moon and the stars and the angels are praising the Lord, we must not be excluded in giving HIGH praises to God.
Prayer:
Lord, Thank You for Your word coming to me today.
I pray for the grace to exalt Your praise above every other praise.
Your praise shall continually be in my mouth.
In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
